Recently a good friend of mine was hired by a consultancy services company at a heavy package. He was very happy. As i know him he is a talented person having a good academic background throughout.I'm sure he has enough stuff for this job.At the same day i met a school friend of mine while travelling in metro. He was my senior during schooling. He was looking worried.I asked him the reason. He told me that he has a degree in engineering discipline and even after one year he hasn't got any job.I wondered because he was a bright student.I never saw him playing during school days because his parents want him to IITs.On my way to my room i was thinking"what was the difference between these two my friends?, although both were good at studies."Then I could infer two points which are responsible for this difference i.e Quality Education and Our fame-fractured society. Our education system is not able to provide quality education to all.It is limited to the elite group of our society. In our country, the primary education, which is the base of education is almost paralysed.Though it is affordable to ordinary man but it is worth nothing for their children. If you go to government primary school near you, you will know the reality. There are few and half- skilled teachers,no student counsellor,no furniture,no books,no fans,no light arrangement,no drinking water,no games facilities.Shall we able to prepare them for a competition with the students of urban school? Our government is setting up IITs and IIMs every year, but how many students from these schools will able to manage a seat there, most probably no one(leaving out those who have rare talent). Most people and our netas argue that for providing quality education more funds are needed. But they are wrong. Most serious drawbacks of our primary and school education is its different mediums and syllabus throughout out India. We already know that at some stage student has to switch English either bachelors or masters level,so why do we instruct them for 12 years in a non-English language. This effects their proficiency in their subjects.I have seen many students weeping at a score of90% in their state boards exams. We need a central policy of same language and syllabus. These two reforms can be done easily in the existing funds. And the situation of our higher education isn't different,Its biggest obstacle is rote learning and excellence in examinations, which discourage innovative thinking and creativity.Take the example of IIT-JEE which is the gateway to best engineering institutes for over 4000 aspirants every year.It is well known even selected candidates score very low marks(sometimes<10%).if> The coaching institutes take the advantage and make huge money. They give hundred such tricky problems to student everyday.Understanding of concept has no connection with it.
Why do they organise IIT-JEE?Because they don't trust the results of higher secondary boards, and want to measure the basic aptitude of a student for the courses taught at IITs.But who says that only outrageous problems measure it?We can measure the same by easier questions allowing less time.It will do two two good things:there will be no need for coaching, students will focus on school.
Our fame-fractured society play an important role in converting the bad situation into worst.Particularly in our middle class society education is every thing.Failing in exams is like a earthquake. We overburden our children with high expectations in adolescent age.We don't give them enough flexibility for choosing their career. In our cities and towns attending coaching classes is use to understand a fashion.Students leave playing as they reach in 10th class.Their life becomes time table of tuition's and coaching classes. They go to school only for compulsory attendances.
The historical function of schooling isn't learning academic skills. It behoove function is to make a child a practical person,to prepare him for good life. This function can go to its haul if a child participate in sports,Extra-curricular activities and social interactions. If our society or our school block this necessary function, our society will lose.
